July 10, 2011 - WAKEBOARDING 101 TRICK TIPS: Airing off the Wake

Now that you are used to wakeboarding and can get up on your board like it is second
nature it’s time to consider finding out why people got into wakeboarding in the first
place…and that is the thrills of snagging air!!! Professional wakeboarders are known
worldwide for their acrobatic and dangerous airborne tricks and stunts. Sure they can
probably carve a mean streak behind a boat but everybody wants to see tricks and the
biggest tool a wakeboarder has for tricking is his or her wakeboard of course. Please
allow me to offer a few tips of assistance that will enable to get decent airs off your
wake, and how to feel comfortable in those fleeting moments of weightlessness that
wakeboarding provides.

1) Once up and riding behind the wake, lead yourself outside of the boat’s wake into the
choppier waters. You can go to the right or left of the wake, whichever way that you feel
you have the most comfort and control is the way you should go. Remember to keep that
rope tight and on your hip.

2) When you’ve built up a good whip for yourself, lean back on your heels or toes. If
the wake is in front of you dig your toes in, if the wake is behind you then it is your
heels. Whichever edge you are riding back toward the wake with, be committed and
determined. The harder you lean on the edge the more speed you will generate and the
more air you will achieve.

3) As you approach the wake, line it up so that you are going to be hitting the wake in a
peak spot. Once you’ve picked your spot keep your eye on it as you continue to ride your
edge toward the water’s lip.

4) As you hit the wake, you do not have to jump. The velocity you have generated on
your edge as you veered toward the wake will be enough to catapult you off the wake and
into the air. Huck your knees up toward your chest so you can have more control in the
air and more hangtime. Keep the rope handle tight to your body especially in mid-air.

5) Spot your landing. The board is strapped to you and the handle is in your control.
Remain calm because you are about to come back down to earth. As you hit the water
you will continue behind the boat right way so you want to bend your knees back down
to absorb the landing. Above when I mentioned keeping the rope tight, it is so that you
don’t give yourself whiplash when you hit the water. Land, bend the knees, grip the
handle tight and let the boat pull you away.

6) Give the thumbs up to your buddies in the boat and gather your bearings, then head
back out of the wake and do it all over again!!!

June 10, 2011 - WAKEBOARDING 101 TRICK TIPS: Getting Up

Wakeboarding is one of the most exciting and popular summer sports in Ontario and with
every passing summer, new riders take to the lakes to try this thrilling watersport for the
1st time. But before you can be the next Aaron Rathy or Harley Clifford you have to start
by picking up the basics…and nothing is more essential than learning how to get up on
your board.

1) First things first, get the board on your feet. Once you are strapped tightly into the
boots, gotten into the water, and grabbed the rope, you are going to want to get your
knees up tight to your chest. Be sure you keep the wakeboard lined up straight between
you and the boat. Ideal conditions are calm waters…the rougher the water, the harder it
is to get up and wakeboard.

2) While tucking with your knees tight you will feel like a ball. With your hands still
on the rope, you are going to want to hold your arms in front of your legs, keeping your
whole body as tight and rigid as possible. Get Ready

3) The boat will start and you will feel the rope tighten right away. Do Not Try to Stand
Up right away!!! The boat will pull you out of the water on it’s own as long as you keep
balled up and hold that rope tight and close to your body. Do your best not to let the rope
get too far in front of you because you will just lean forward, hit the water and have to try
all over again.

4) As the boat pulls you out of the water, remain calm and stay small and tight. You can
ride like this as long as you want. Once you are comfortable and completely out of the
water, stand up and you will naturally turn toward your lead foot.

5) Keep the handle in your ‘holster’ and tight to your front hip. This gives you the most
control and prevents you from being dragged with locked arms. Get comfortable riding
sideways and you are on your way.

Keep on watching this space for more trick tips as you wakeboard those lazy summer
days away.

Videos

Check out this video of a 3 year old snowboarding on his Burton Chopper kids snowboard. These boards are designed to lift the edges off the snow to get kids on the right track from day one. The mellow camber and super soft flex makes it easy for even the lightest weight shredders to steer, ollie, and stop. For the two smalles sizes, Burton developed grippy foot pads and anew riglet accessory that lets you tow Junior around till he's ready to rock bindings.
